Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection of the gums which causes inflammation, bleeding, and a breakdown of the gum tissue. The most recommended treatment for gum disease is a scaling and root planing, commonly referred to as a deep cleaning. Scaling removes infected gum tissue from above and below your gum line, while root planing is the process by which we smooth rough patches on your tooth’s surface where bacteria can become trapped.
